Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Stereo Breast Biopsy

NOCHS’ Hologic MultiCare® Platinum Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Guidance System is designed to provide industry-leading technology and maximum patient comfort. This system delivers exceptional image quality and pinpoint accuracy thanks to leading-edge target and guidance technology.

What is a stereotactic biopsy?

The stereotactic biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure using a computer to locate and sample a specific area of concern in the breast. The patient lies face-down on a specially designed table, which has an opening where the breast is positioned. Unlike a routine mammogram, this technology produces a stereo image -- images of the same area from different angles — to determine the exact location for the biopsy. Once a local anesthetic is administered to numb the breast, a specially trained Radiologist guides a biopsy needle into the breast. One or multiple samples of breast tissue (each about the thickness of a grain of rice) are removed with the needle. The entire process takes about an hour. Most women feel well enough to resume their usual activities shortly after the procedure.

Do I need a physician referral?

Yes. Once we have a referral from your physician, our Breast Evaluation Center staff will coordinate everything for you -- from scheduling the biopsy, to follow up ... even coordinating surgery, if needed.
