Digital Mammography
Digital technology provides quick picture perfect results.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97%.
North Ottawa Community Health System is committed to the fight against breast cancer. NOCHS offers digital mammography, which is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is acquired and, most importantly, viewed. The Radiologist can manipulate the images in many different ways in order to evaluate micro-calcifications and focus on areas of concern. The images appear on the technologist’s monitor in a matter of seconds which means less time in the breast imaging suite for patients. The digital images are easily stored and transferred electronically, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films.
NOCHS strives to increase the number of area women who follow recommendations for regular screenings. This technology serves as a method for which we can achieve such a goal. Talk to your doctor about scheduling a digital mammogram or contact the Breast Evaluation Center at 616.847.5430.
